I enjoy photographing insects, they are quite interesting and some are very beautiful! I study honeybees in my day job, so I guess it makes sense for me. However I get stuck looking at all the insects in Florida and don’t really get to see many from other parts of the world. What bugs do you all have in your home towns? Get down and dirty, the best parts are when you get up close! Try a little macro challenge!
Blue-faced Darner. Shot in Loxahatchee wildlife reserve, Florida.
This little guy landed on our boat and just sat there posing. He even smiled for me!

sorry but not seeing ang camera settings here tersha……touché

The only forum that requires settings is SharkTank. Tersha’s setting are available if you click the picture to see the full size in Flickr because Flickr captures that information (most of the time.)

20140330(558).JPG by Bugz on Light Stalking My big ole Prionid Beetle I once played with for several days. This picture is more for ‘face-on’ effect of those mandibles and the mystery of finding its huge eyes than for showing completeness of the critter.

What a nice composition. You made his mom proud. I really like the scientific information that is added to the bottom. It adds to the composition. I am betting that your granddaughter will have a life long fascination with “bugs”. I am hoping to inspire a passion for travel in my grandchildren, but whether or not they find their passion in ours, the important thing is that they have a model for a lifetime of interests.

OK, this one is actually from my research on diseases affecting honeybees. In the upper left is a bee that is hairless and black due to infection with a virus known as Chronic Bee Paralysis Virus (sometimes called Acute Bee Paralysis Virus). I research how this disease and others are distributed in Florida feral bees and what their effect on declining bee populations they have.I love honeybees, almost as much as dogs and my son….. They are just so cute close up!

Iburgess, in the upper right corner surrounded by other workers; is that the Queen by chance? She looks a bit larger and abdominal tergites seem longer to me. Great image.
So glad to hear that some work is being done on diminishing honeybees. We have a few back working flowers in Spanish Fort, AL this year. Few to none here for a couple of years.

She could be a newly emerged queen, this was in brood comb and there were a few open queen cells. Our hive queens are marked, so its not the laying queen, but maybe this one will start a new colony of her own! She does appear to have a harem beginning around her…..
You can always start a hive of your own! They are pretty easy to keep, and the homegrown honey is just fabulous!

Thanks! They are fun (and rather exciting) to photograph in the hive, except I have to do it through a bee suit. These are Africanized bees, so they are pretty mean.

Great Macro shots Tersha. Re: the frame labeled “WASP” (which would be in ORDER: Hymenoptera . . . meaning membraneous wings and would have two pairs of wings) is most probably a ‘Syrphid Fly’ in the ORDER: Diptera . . . meaning “two wings”. The single pair of wings and the ‘aristate antennae’ are clues.
Google “images of syrphid flies” or click this and see if you agree:

Allows Edits? YesHi @bugz, you are right, my ‘wasp’ is most definitely a ‘Syrphid Fly’. I wasn’t sure about it being a wasp, but, then I forgot to check!
So, would this image be a wasp……?<script async src=”//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js” charset=”utf-8″></script>
