I dithered about which group to post these in. They are people pictures, so they could be put in portraits, they are mostly smiling, so they could go in that thread about how Americans never smile in pictures, and they are infrared, so they could go there. One was in high key style, so it could have gone in the “art of photography” group. And they are all black and white, ergo, the eenie meeny miny mo….

ok … and since I am an educator by profession and I always tell my students there are “no” stupid questions – I will be brave and ask the question (for all of us who just started with photography)…

what do you mean by “infrared”?

  • Avatar Image evn1ngstar said 11 months ago:

@keka; It is a form of photography that uses infrared sensitive film (although very hard to come by these days), or a screw on IR filter on digital cameras, or in my case, I use a digital camera that has been physically modified to allow near infrared spectrum light onto the sensor.

DIgital cameras normally have an infrared blocker to shoot regular photographs. This is removed and replaced with a filter that blocks visible light when modifying for IR.

You get interesting images as green growing things generally come out white, some materials (or the dye used on them) come out differently. Such as the hat in the first image. When I see it with my eyes, it is black, the infrared versions is not black at all.
Red hair comes out white, blue sky comes out black.

I’ve been shooting IR since 2008 and am always exploring what it can do.

Thank you for the explanation. Not sure if my camera has the IR filter. Probably does.. canon 50D. If it does, I’ll take a try at it.

I might have to invest in another piece of equipment now… ;)
