@caimi initially I had a Pentax K-r after a photographer friend of mine recommended the Pentax brand and it had some good reviews over a similar spec Nikon, obviously I bought lenses so I’m pretty much tied to the brand. Having said that the K-3 has had some really good reviews and I think Pentax are starting to compete with Canon and Nikon up to…[Read more]

Secret GardensAfter the death of my K-r I spent a month without a camera while I waited for it to be repaired, sadly repair was impossible so with the help of a little insurance money I’ve upgraded myself to the Pentax K-3. The shots below are my test shots taken in my garden using an older Sigma 70-300 “macro” lens

@m240 you can get away with photographing drunk guys so long as they are not in a herd.. sound advice to avoid them in the future though :)

Thanks @joanna where can I see some of your work?

He shoots a lot in similar areas to me so I recognise some of the places in his “across the street” series, he has a really good eye, definitely something to aspire to!Check It Out

@jonostan anywhere with tourists is a great place to start because it is so much easier to blend in, Trafalgar Square, China Town and Oxford Street are my main areas beside the train and tend to give great opportunities for street photography

Eventually I’d like to get to somewhere near the level of this guy…[Read more]

  • ed.aldridge Replied to a Topic (Quick Intro)

Hi @jonostan one of the things that I learnt the hard way is that no amount of post processing will make a bad image good but it will make a good image great. If you shoot raw then you will always need to do a certain amount of editing, this can range from slight colour tweaks to B&W or HDR conversions.

One thing that I read which really…[Read more]

  • ed.aldridge Replied to a Topic (High Key image comment please)

Hi @rosiegirl the white background is too bright and over powers everything in the picture. I think you have a bit too much going on as well, I’m not really sure what I’m supposed to be looking at. This is a personal opinion here but I think high key images work best when there is a single element to look at, a blood red rose on a white…[Read more]

@nanyar I appreciate the input but I am happy with the composition and style it is more the editing that I am trying to improve, with what you have said I may do a colour version and see how that looks.

@tobiepsg I have Elements 11, is that a late enough version to have the Fill / Content Aware / Dissolve thing you mention or are you talking…[Read more]

@robdotinfo I think it looks much better, though as @gordonjames says it is what you think that really counts, do you think it looks better? Check It Out

@gordonjames Not a big fan of HDR to be honest, I’ve seen too many bad examples :) I hadn’t spotted the high contrast area but you are right it is a distraction, you are right as well about the pole, it bothered me a little as well so I will try cropping as I prefer not to clone if I can help it. Thanks for the feedback!

@nikon-nut thanks John, always nice to hear that from a fellow B&W exponent!

@el-dub LOL, HDR to the extreme!! I really like this photo but it is something I am considering getting printed so I want it to be just right or I will be getting an earful from the financial controller (aka, her indoors or the missus)Check It Out

  • ed.aldridge Replied to a Topic (Bracketed)

@fcalesso You could try using a polarising filter perhaps, maybe in combination with a graduated filter especially if you are aiming for a silhouetted tree? Also a step to the right or crop a little from the left of the image so you don’t have the triangle of light branches in the top left cornerCheck It Out

  • ed.aldridge Replied to a Topic (Accordion Player in Venice)

I’ve submitted 24 images, it is quite interesting watching which of the images I’ve submitted are doing well and which ones are doing badly, it is also interesting seeing which images I am losing to and which I am winning against, the WTF factor works on both counts, sometimes the other image has been much better than mine, sometimes much worse.. …[Read more]

I’m not sure about pixoto, there are an awful lot of bad pictures on there, in order to earn credit you have to vote on two images, if you skip 5 votes you have to vote or close the window down, I just had to vote on an out of focus flower or a tree stump…

That said, it is quite addictive :)Check It Out

@robdotinfo maybe try a portrait crop so you still have some of the trees to act as a frame but they don’t overpower the waterfall, if you get the B&W conversion right I think it will definitely improve the way this image looks, try the Lightroom presets first and see what you think, they will give you a good starting pointCheck It Out
