    Time Lapse

I have always thought time lapse photography to be a daunting endeavor. Apart from a few parameters, it is actually more simple than we think.

There are plenty of online tutorials to walk us through the process. Most people use Mac’s Quick Time Pro. I am cheap and did not wish to pay for the upgrade so I am using Picasa.

Two essential items are needed…besides the camera. A tripod and timer switch /intervoltometer if your camera is not set up for this type of photography. I know Canon does not have this feature, some Nikons do. Pro Master is less expensive than Canon’s timer switch. ND filters may be necessary during peak daylight hours.

To begin with; your camera needs to be set to manual mode. Set the white balance to the proper balance, not auto. Set the ISO to 100, aperture and shutter speed accordingly to the exposure desired. Exposure should be roughly half that of the interval. Focus on your desired subject then switch to manual focus to keep that focus setting. Also, shoot in jpeg, not RAW. No need to complicate the post processing.

In my videos, I chose a 3 second interval. After each image capture, the timer counts 3 seconds then captures the next image. The shutter speed was 1.6 seconds and I stacked a series of ND filters. Any faster and the video will look choppy rather than a smooth transition. Rule of thumb is to have the shutter speed roughly half that of the interval.

Movies are shot at a frame rate of 20 – 30 frames per second so I chose a frame rate of 24 to closely match our TV frame rate. I shot 240 images divided by a frame rate of 24 = a 10 second movie clip.

The 240 images were uploaded into Lightroom to batch process the files to enhance them a bit and to eliminate all the pesky dust spots adhered to my old XTi’s sensor. I then exported the images – uploading into Picasa.

I found an informative tutorial on creating time lapse videos using Picasa here, http://timelapseblog.com/2011/06/30/how-to-make-a-picasa-time-lapse/

Next time, I will import audio into my time lapse video clips.

I too enjoy the dark of the night, wandering about with camera while most people are safely planted at home or in the pubs. Nice and quiet this solitude and a chance to capture some brilliant images. Typically, we focus on city lights at night. But you have provided the inspiration to capture natural or [...]

I also have been thinking about this for some time and have yet to make the purchase. I have used my friends Alien Bees strobes with softbox and they work well. The weak link is the remote trigger system. Pocket Wizards are much too pricey.

I do not have a smart phone; I have a dumb phone. I can make and receive phone calls, text and check email, twitter and facebook. (strange, facebook is now both a noun and a verb) Surfing the web is all but impossible without the data plan that my phone does not have that capability. [...]

  • Are you looking for a lens with a wider reach or a macro lens? To have both in one lens could work, but you may be disappointed with the results. I have a zoom macro lens and well, the results disappoint me. As stevedias and tomdinning pointed out, those are good macro options. The 24-135 [...]

I must agree with thepaparazzo to a degree. Sometimes after we learn this craft we come to realize the camera we have can not achieve the specific task we desire. Photography is like fishing, or golf. We purchase all kinds of gear because we can and it is fun. Lord knows I have enough fishing [...]

Rob Rob Rob. I used to have that many lures as well but 3/4 of mine ended up tied up in some low lying branches on some back woods mill pond where the bass are large enough to swallow your boat. :) The last one I had hooked allowed me to pull it all the way to the side of the boat before it looked me right in the eye and spit out my lure right back at me. I haven’t been the same since.

In my opinion, I would purchase PS Lightroom 3 as your primary RAW file editor and catalog software. Export the file in tiff format and open in Photoshop for further editing if necessary. I do 80% of my editing using Lightroom and the rest in PS Elements using layers to enhance lighting and mainly for [...]

This winter has been un-inspiring with the lack of snow and shades of beige landscapes. I meet up on a somewhat semi regular basis with a a few other photographers for breakfast. What Mopho said! Seasonal lack of light is a real phenomenon. I find myself moping about, needing more sleep than a teenager and eating ravenously. Vitamin Dand maybe bright UV lights may do the trick. A new toy is always fun as lisahill pointed out. Good luck!

  • northmetrophoto posted on the forum topic What's Your Pet Hate About Photography? in the group Light Stalking Group:   3 months, 3 weeks ago · View

I hate the old argument that photoshop has killed photography. A photo manipulated in photoshop is not a photograph. Yet they site Ansel Adams as the benchmark in pure photography. Little did they research that he manipulated his images in the original photoshop…the darkroom.

Really? Here I thought photography to be a contactless sport activity. Contactless in the physical sense.

What a statement! New generation, Valleygirl, youthful kids with a seeming violent disposition, what a perfect composition.
