any advice please,  I have to do a group  photo of appx 6 people, who will all  be facing  10am sun, nowhere to hide for shelter, i think it may be to high in the sky to block it out  with a reflector,  and the venue could  possibly throw a lot of tree shadows onto subjects. ???? any advice appreciated

Fill flash is your friend.  That or place your subjects in the shade, right at the edge, if you can.

            Hi Carol,

The best advice probably would be, don’t make the picture but I guess that is not an option.

So the second best option is to use a few very large diffusion scrims. Please note, that if there is wind, it is very difficult to keep them steady and safe. Even with enough sandbags to hold them down.
Also, note that you might need two assistants on the shoot. Both for building it and for repositioning the scrims (that will be necessary).

If you use a scrim like this (but much bigger than the one you see on this image or more than one) you need your own flash or LED lights to do the proper lighting.

Carol, you mention that the venue ‘could possible throw a lot of tree shadows onto subjects’.

If this is in fact the case, one possibility is to have them – all stand just in the shade (a foor or two), or at least have their faces/heads in the shade if standing completely in the shade is a no-go, and let the light – reflecting off the ground be your fill light.

Better yet, if you have shade close to a wall (hope non-coloured wall) then you can use the same approach. Have them stand in the shade and let the fill light reflect off the wall.

Last option, is set your camera to the highest frame rate it has, then use a multiple exposure capture and process it in HDR.
