Please provide a little of the history of the structure with your photos.Located in the Ayres Natural Bridge Park in Converse County, Wyoming, at a bend in LaPrele Creek sits the old power house, a gray concrete building from the early 1900s built by the North Platte Irrigation Company to supply power to pump water from North Platte River for irrigation. The company went bankrupt before finishing the project but the shell of the building still remains.

Barn Built in the Mid to Late 1800’s Owned by One of the Principals in the Johnson County Cattle War. The building is now surrounded by the Town of Buffalo Wy.
I think I may have shared this a year or so ago but I guess I will resurrect it.

Not sure if this qualifies as it’s actually the bones of an American (Union) Civil War submarine. It was sunk in the Mississippi River near Vicksburg, MS by the Confederacy, who were guarding the very strategic port. The National Park Service had it raised and is restoring it.

This is the family home of American president Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was an engineer and prolific inventor who incorporated many unusual things into his home when it was built. This is the rear view of the main house, reflected in a nearby pond. The pond is very shallow (8-10 inches), and was designed to keep freshly caught fish fresh (as there was no refrigeration in the 1700s), until it could be cooked for dinner.

I do not think that this deserted farm house has any historical significance but as I took the shot I felt a kind of sadness coming over me and I could not help but wonder what stories it had to tell.

history and old buildings, two of my favorite things. just tell me when to shut up.
st john’s lutheran church in arena, nd. the town of arena was founded in 1906 and peaked in population before the 1930s with around 150 residents. i couldn’t find when the church was built, but it sounds as if it was moved to the town in the 1970s.
lutheran church in lonetree, nd. an on again off again town that was originally established in 1888. 5 or so people still live in the area. the church appears to have been built on site, but i couldn’t find out when. it sounds like there are plans for the county to demolish it.

Wonderfully evocative time capsules Beth and terrific pictures. Makes me think that someone should 3-D scan buildings like these so that one day someone might rebuild them from scratch (unless the blueprints lie in archives somewhere). They are such beautifully unique designs that we just don’t see anymore.

thanks. the colors are due to a neat trick i learned in lightroom. desaturate the blues to nearly -100 and cyans to around -50 to -70. then adjust the white balance for cooler tones until you get what you want. it gives colors a very different look. works best on old buildings.

The Dee Wright Observatory. Built entirely out of lave rock at an elevation of 5,187 feet in the Oregon Cascade Mountains by the Civilian C0nservation Corps. Completed in 1935. Named for the foreman of the project who passed away a year before it was finished.
In 1964 NASA astronauts trained in the area in preparation for their trip to the moon.

The Castle of Pioz:
It was building in 15th Century by the House of Mendoza, a family of Spanish nobles, in Guadalajara. It has a military appearance, but it was designed for residential usage. It was abandoned very soon, because its proprietors had other castles that could be better choices to live in.
The Castle of Chinchón:
It’s a building made in 15th Century and It have been propriety of the Counts of Chinchón since then to current days. It is in Madrid.
Jesus del Monte convent:
An old Jesuit convent close to Loranca de Tajuña (Guadalajara). It was built in 16th Century in the highest place of this area, with a beautiful views of Tajuña valley. Jesuits used it as summer residence long time ago.

Chinchón is the most touristic place of these three. Pioz is a a very little town and the convent is abandoned in the top of a hill… and we went at night! I like the quiet places without a lot of people, I’m usually looking for them and try people don’t appear in my shots.

The fascinating roof of an ancient French chateaux that was disassembled, shipped to the USA, and rebuilt as a lake house. It collapsed three times during reconstruction. The wealthy owner ended up bringing a crew of specialist French masons over to finish the project as modern American workmen didn’t know how to hold up the weight of these old, heavy chimneys.
