Allows Edits? YesInspired by Erik´s “Power to the people”.
Here in Iceland power production is classified as “clean” and “sustainable” – since it is based on water or geothermal plants. There are loads of arguments against this classification since geothermal plants are enormously polluting (spewing huge amounts of sulphur damps)and have a limited life span. Water plants demand the building of dams that destroy valuable natural areas and ecosystems. Power lines are mostly built above the ground and are really an eyesore. However, I think they can be an interesting capture as structures, but a challenge – one has to choose carefully how to visualise them or use them or else they remain just the eyesore they are.The image was shot recently on a trip with the purpose to take this picture. What is lacking on it and the main reason for the trip, were the arctic terns that usually nest in the area around the lines. I wanted an image of the birds flying in the setting sun with the lines leading the eyes up to the mountains in the background. But alas, there were no terns. They had obviously moved elsewhere, probably because of the noise from the road as well as the humming from the lines. But the lines were still there – they are not moving anywhere for a while.

Power lines are always a frustration in nature shots. Unless they’re occupied by thousands of Amur Falcons, gathering for the trek to the north and east as far as China (from South Africa).

Allows Edits? YesIt was a gorgeous day and the glass insulators were literally glowing. So I call this Sky Jewelry.

This is what a power line looks like after a tree falls on it.

Allows Edits? YesScary business ! We had hiking trails covered with those in western Norway the spring before the last. But still they are building them above the ground.

Allows Edits? YesLovely photo Chris! The image has a slightly spooky feel and it suits the winter season really well. Is that frost on the grass?

Allows Edits? YesHi Dahlia, thanks! I think that is just high contrast conversion, and higher exposure at the foot of the photograph because of the heavy use of grad filters. This is at the back of Offord Darcy, between Huntingdon and St Neots, not a million miles from you. 🙂

Allows Edits? YesGreat, I’ve gone past St Neots to Cambridge a few times. Never been there, but can see that it’s a very beautiful town 🙂
