I almost used this one for last week's challenge as a duotone submission. But since this week's challenge is red, I will use it now. My wife says the chairs are not red, and I say they're red enough. This was in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida.   Michael

Retired Chevy flatbed delivery truck. Now just a plant stand. But a really nice plant stand. 🙂

THAT is one classic flatbed, and if it's not running, what an excellent 2nd life.  Perfect!

I believe it still runs but is not in service anymore. Here it's parked about 15 feet from their retail store during the annual tulip festival. A crowd of people standing just off camera on the left. The reason for the tight crop. I'm not a car guy but really liked the curves of this vintage farm truck.

I like the tight crop Dave. The truck stands out with its glossy red but it doesn't totally overwhelm the tulips.

Actually they were still quite supple. Maybe because temperature was rising. Part of this rose bush was in sun and ice crystals melting. I had to work fast setting up. On a tripod taken at f/13, 3/10, 200iso.

She was one of the girls from the IDP camps hosted by Jinda at their picnic.  I’m not sure if she was taken by Daesh.  I know she is a member of the Peshmerga though;  ‘Those who choose death’, the Kurdish Paramilitary force who fought Saddam, and now Daesh.  She was a great model, and knew exactly what she was doing… pose, pause, click…pose pause click…

I follow someone on Flickr, a woman in the Kurdistan army, she posts some scenes of Kurdistan, people in villages, plus her and her ‘friends', with their rifles, etc. It's shown me a way of life, and country that I knew nothing about. I don't understand what peshmerga means exactly?

      • #395262

        chris pook
        Participant

Peshmerga means ‘Those who face death'.  They are a paramilitary force, and essentially the army of the Kurdish Region of Iraq.  The Kurdish region is semi-autonomous from the rest of Federal Iraq and do not have Iraqi Army on their soil.

They fought a number of wars with Federal Iraq, and civil wars between the Talibanis based in Sulaymaniya and the Bazarnis based in Erbil.  They are mainly a militia / guerrilla force, rather than a conventional army.

The politics are not easy – it's the middle east after all!  There is the PDK, the PKK, and the YPG in Syria.  The YPG are a proscribed terrorist organisation fighting a war against the Turks, while allied to the Americans fight Daesh in Syria, while both the US and the Turks are allies in NATO.  Simples eh!

The Pesh were successful at holding Daesh when they were approaching Erbil – albeit with the support of Coalition air power.  Erbil is the capital of the Kurdish Region.  The US is spending $600m building a consulate there, which gives you some idea of strategic intent.  Some say that Iran is building a land corridor to the Mediterranean through Northern Iraq and Syria, and Erbil sits right in the middle.. explains why the US is looking to bed in there.

I really like all Iraqis to be fair, but I am safest in Erbil where I can walk the streets, and so have a particular fondness for this region.  They are real fighters, and very proud of their female Pesh units.

I asked my pal Suzn what her family did in 2014, when Daesh were approaching Dohuk.  She said Grandad got all the families together.  He sent the girls to our village, 2 hours away in the mountains, and the men stayed to fight.  Suzn wanted to say and fight… obviously, but was sent anyway.

More than you wanted to know.  😉

Wow, Chris, it'll take me a while to digest all that, but it gives me a much better picture than the definition of peshmerga. Thank for taking the time, I appreciate it. 🙂

I find this photo amazingly beautiful and soothing for my mind. Would definitely love to print and hang this.

Any way I view this, the lines are graceful and create a slightly different view. The lines are so fluid and the colors are rich. Beautiful is an understatement, Michael.

Love the T6, as well. Firing up the B29… the smell, the sound…. Must have been a good day!

Not to mention the thunder in your chest as the 29 rolls by.  Any day seeing old warbirds is a good day!

Will have to comment another day. Love red and spellbound by many of the posts. I have 2 favorite “reds”. Red #1 – old rusty Dodge Ram tow truck just sitting in a field.

You certainly captured its patina well Pat!  I know it's not the ST but if you get a chance to shoot this again, I'd put the Dodge badge in focus.  Think it'll make the photo show-worthy.

Red is so powerful. The photos are really inspiring.  I read the two articles at the beginning and decided to take a photo I did a number of years ago and applied the use of the histogram and curves as described by Jason Row.  This was a birthday outing to the movies and caught this before anyone else sat down in the row.  I tend to take photos as things catch my eye.

This is another example of your unique eye Pat. It's hard to explain why but this image reminds me of San Francisco's “Painted Ladies”.

I really don't like shooting in a studio but as a learning exercise, this one was fun (and my fellow learners were great actors).

One great thing about red is that is has about a thousand different shades.

I bet the human eye/brain apparatus is constructed to be instantly attracted to the color “red”, especially if it is moving or flashing.
