Layered Images and Other Editing Options Come to Instagram

A major trend sweeping across the digital media world is the advent of AI, generative and otherwise.

While this might seem like a major threat to Adobe, another quieter movement might also spell tough times for the makers of editing software and apps.

And that’s the proliferation of pretty advanced features directly within apps like Instagram.

In fact, Meta’s platform just announced the addition of layered images alongside text and stickers. It’s the first addition that has caught the headlines as it combines with the company’s embrace of AI to allow for some pretty powerful (and creative) editing options right on Instagram.

“You can now add text — including our newest fonts — and layer images via stickers, to your photos and carousels. This gives you the creative flexibility to make your content stand out and explore new, more entertaining, storytelling with photos and carousels.”

On the carousel front, you can now add up to 20 pictures to a single carousel. For those who aren’t familiar with the term, carousel refers to a multiple-image upload and is somewhat the preferred format for Instagram photography these days. Why? Well, as many of you probably know that use Instagram, most of your pictures don’t show up in your followers’ feeds. To make sure that relevant pictures do, carousels give you an opportunity to capitalize on the chance that your content does grace your followers’ feeds.

It’s quite a shift away from the days before but it also allows users to capture specific memories and events in a photo album style that wasn’t in style before the carousel feature.

Any thoughts on the growing number of editing options within social media apps are welcome in the comments.
