All of this talk about smartphones OSes and manufacturing logistics will seem like just a bunch of hot air five years from now.
At least that’s what Samsung seems to think as the company’s mobile guru DJ Koh said the transition to 5G will make wearables the new hot ticket, leaving headsets in the dust.
Whether or not that happens remains to be seen but it is an interesting hot take on the state of the smartphone industry nonetheless.
Our only question is what is going to happen to all of those smartphone cameras that manufacturers keep tacking on to devices?
No specifics on that point, but Samsung Electronics design team chief points out the obvious when he says, “smartphone design has hit a limit” in his response to why the company is releasing the Galaxy Fold, for example.
“[The] previous 10 years, it was an era of the smartphone…From this year, maybe a new era is opening because of the emergence of the Internet of Things, 5G, AI, and all these technologies mingling together. The new era is in front of us,” Koh continued.
As ZDNet points out, that sounds great for Apple which is currently beating the heck out of Samsung in the wearables market but that could all change on a dime, too. Again, looking at these statements from the perspective of the cameras, it is interesting to imagine what the future of that aspect of the smartphone is.
And there is no doubt that audio and video will be a huge component of the wearables market as well given the number of social media platforms out there dedicated to just that. Of course, we’d like to know what you think.

I like to read and I use both my smartphone and my tablet to do this. I haven’t worn a watch in 20 years and have no desire to wear one again (I don’t like wearing jewellery of any sort). How will I be able to read (because paper seems to be disappearing too) in this new era of wearables?
A good question John! Thank you for your comment 🙂
A rose by any other name smells as sweet.
That is, as before, emerging technologies will continue to merge and consolidate into one device, in this generation the smartphone. Now with IOT, AI & 5G, these new higher level technologies will be mingled into one device, a restructured wearable different in physical form but still providing the same functionalities but more advanced and scope as the smartphone.
So much for smartphone obsolescence.
