Canon and Nikon might have made history with their first full-frame mirrorless cameras, but it is Sony that is riding off into the sunset with market share and sales in Japan.

Sony currently holds 43% of the full-frame mirrorless market in Japan with its Sony a7 III while Nikon’s Z6 held 9% and Canon EOS R and EOS RP came in at 14% and 12%.
As PetaPixel points out, combined those three models represent some 35% of the market, well below Sony’s commanding 43%.
As to whether or not Sony’s lead will erode over time remains to be seen but you know they’ve got to be happy with these numbers.
In fact, the a7 II is currently the fifth best-selling full-frame mirrorless camera in Japan meaning that Sony rounds out the top and the bottom with its current gen besting the competition and its previous gen nipping at their heels – for now.
Analysts think that Nikon and Canon will eventually eat away at Sony’s dominance in Japan, but it might be slower going than once believed.
Nikon and Canon’s cameras got rave reviews when they were released but, like all newcomers, seem to suffer from a lack of a built out ecosystem – an advantage that Sony is leveraging for dominance in the marketplace.
That will change with time, of course, with Canon’s RF system having at least 6 new lenses in development in addition to the current four on offer.
Sony has been doing this for a while so it is no surprise that it has a loyal and established position in the full-frame mirrorless segment.
Whether or not it stays that way remains to be seen.
