I really appreciate the most beautiful sunrises on our winter mornings, albeit enhanced by the smog of many coal stoves and fires for heat from our less privileged areas. I decided to take a clip of one of these this morning. Nothing fancy, not a prize winner. Just for its beauty alone.
Then I thought of a few shots from homes seen on this forum recently (from Chris Pook among others) and said to myself: why not have a throwdown of beautiful views snapped from our porches?

Allows Edits? YesOh boy, I hope it rains tonight – from my porch, the street looks like a set off Tin Pan Alley.

I live in an old lower income, middle class, working man’s neighborhood. There are a lot of bars, restaurants, and liquor stores. Directly across the street from our porch is a small grocery store. I like our neighborhood. There is always something going on; there is a constant drone of sirens. I shoot a lot of pictures from our porch, because I do see beauty in all of this decay. I took this shot on a winter morning. The sunrise was reflecting off of the liquor store sign. It must have been just the perfect time of year and day, as this was the only time I’ve ever witnessed it.

I also live in an ‘old lower income, middle class, working man’s neighborhood’ Kent, LOL! My house was built in 1984! Perhaps the only difference is that mine is on the side of a ravine, rendering beautiful sunrises due to the lack of obstructions.
I agree with you – there’s beauty to be found in any neighborhood, on the condition that you’re prepared and willing to look for it. Well done for seeing this unique moment and snapping it!
My shot above is also only to be found annually during a particular couple of weeks well into winter, after the generation of lots of smog and the sun appearing at this particular spot. I had to take it or wait another year for the opportunity.

Allows Edits? YesI am intrigued by that power pole Kent. Not sure if that’s your front fence but the bottom looks like its inside the fence and the top looks like its out on the street? Nice capture though.

Hi Graham. The pole is across the street. I shot this from a second story window. There is no fence there. I think what you were referring to is the rear exterior wall of a grocery store. Our house faces that store. We have no neighbors across the street.

Kent, what an interesting catch. That reflection is so very, very bright. You caught this at the absolute perfect moment. You neighbourhood is a wonderful example of the north and northeast. The local small grocery stores, shops, bars, and liquor stores gave the neighbourhood such a wonderful flavour. The bars are where you would see your neighbours, and where you would unwind after a stressful day at work. We lived in one such neighbourhood in Northern Kentucky. It was wonderful.

Tobie, what a beautiful sunrise. Sunrises are so nice, when you only have to walk outside your door for the photograph. Like you, we live in an old lower income, middle class, working man’s neighbourhood. But this is rapidly changing. Our home was built in 1952, a simple cement block, one story home, on a slab. When our home was built, it was located on the old highway U. S. Highway One, in Florida. They relocated the two lane highway about one-half mile west, and widened it to six lanes. Now the old homes are being torn down for these monstrous, mega-homes.
Here is the view from our front porch. It was the last manned shuttle launch from Cape Canaveral. The picture is not very good, but I thought it might be of interest. The boat in the picture had been stuck on a sand bar for almost six months.

I had a friend who was a police officer in Melbourne for a number of years. He is retired to Belize now. Lucky Dude.

Kent, we are in Cocoa, which is about forty minutes north of Melbourne. Belize is a beautiful country. I have been there many, many times beginning in the late 1970’s. Hopefully you will be heading down there for a holiday.

I lived on Amelia Island from 1997 to 2009. I saw a couple of the shuttle launches streak past the Island over the years.

Allows Edits? YesHi Horatio, great to hear from you again! What a rare event to have captured. You must have seen several launches from your location? And what a view from the front porch! I’m so jealous. We have a steep driveway so all I can see is paving and tree tops (which is why I haven’t posted anything here) 🙁
-
June 4, 2018 at 6:21 pm #346903
Graham, the launches are spectacular. The very nice thing, is that you listen to the radio and when the countdown gets to about less than one minute, you can head out with your camera to the water. LOL!!!
A view of the treetops would be so very nice. It must be terrific to live up on the top of a hill.
-
June 4, 2018 at 1:14 am #346636
Wow, lucky you to see these launches from time to time. Even without that – a beautiful view!
-

Tobie, yes, you are so right. It is a beautiful view. Last night SpaceX launched a rocket that I wanted to see. Unfortunately, I set my alarm at the wrong time. The night launches are really exciting. The only problem with the launches these days, is that they are so very fast, the rockets take off and are in space, in seconds. The old Delta rockets were really slow, so you could get some really outstanding images. The really interesting aspect, is that you see the launch, and about forty seconds later, you feel and hear the sound wave. If you are in the house, it will rattle the windows.

Fun idea, Tobie. Smoke and smog make for amazing sunsets…sadly, we had some great ones from the fires last year. And they have started again already! Love how the sun is sinking in your shot.
Hmmm…I think I am supposed to say that we live in a middle income neighbourhood…we have logging truck drivers, mill workers, teachers and police in our cul-de-sac. Merritt is small, with few services…so affordable for many folks. A contrast to nearby Vancouver, where the cost of living is very high.
I am going to throw in two shots…I usually shoot from our deck, when catching the sunset…but I went out into the cul-de-sac to shoot one with our house IN it last summer…
Suburban Sunset:
We are lucky enough to back on to a school field and we get an unobstructed view of the sun going down from late spring to early fall. And on the right night, if we look to the right off our deck we sometimes see the Northern Lights. Merritt has very little light pollution (small city) and is known to sky watchers as a place to stay. You only need to drive a few minutes to find dark skies.

🙂 A rainbow! Thanks Graham. It is a great spot.

Beautiful, Leanne! Those clouds are one-time events and is a must-shoot when they occur!
You are so fortunate to see the northern lights – something I can only dream of!
-
June 4, 2018 at 6:40 pm #346909
Thanks Tobie. Maybe there is trip, in your future, that will bring you closer to the Northern Lights! My husband and I drove up to the Northwest Territories several years ago and experienced amazing lights. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the camera skills/knowledge to even consider capturing them. I also learned the “zipper trick” – if you slide your zipper up and down when the light are in the sky, it will make them “dance” – or so they say!

Leanne, both of those shots are gorgeous! The best of both worlds, magnificent sunsets and the aurora borealis! Beautiful! Thank you.

Thanks Horatio. We get some pretty awesome sunsets in Merritt but this one was spectacular. I don’t think I could have done it justice from the deck as I would have lost so much of the sky.

Here is a Kereru (native wood-pigeon) sitting on the glass balustrade on our deck. We did have a wooden balustrade but since we have changed we see the surrounding greenery and trees much better. ????

These birds are very beautiful indeed Misty! It looks like you have nice green surroundings where the balustrade ‘upgrade’ made perfect sense!

Mistyisle, what a colourful bird with such lovely greenery. This Kereru looks pretty happy that you upgraded your balustrade. Thank you.

Allows Edits? NoWe just moved to a 55+ community in Ocala and although Florida is very friendly for fixed income folks with its low taxes, I found a certain unease in living here. I couldn’t put my finger on the source of my discomfort until my husband said it was a bit like military housing. That’s not bad, it’s just the level of conformity is what I finally determined was my problem. Now, I keep thinking “The Stepford Wives”. We DO have pretty remarkable skies, however.

Wow, nice one David! I dare take shots of the moon from my porch but won’t even try to do the milky way (too much light pollution)! Maybe I should, just for the heck of it – it may come out better than what I thought!
