Just returned home from a completely magical 2 days in Lapland with wifey (who cried) and youngest, (who didn't) but who was still completely enchanted.  It was just lovely.

Without wanting to crowd this space, I was wondering if anyone can tell me if there is any way to deal with the over-exposure in the middle of this shot. I like the pic but its ruined by the white glare. I tried unsuccessfully to clone some of the greyer sky on the left of the tree but to no avail.

    • #315959

      Rob Eyers

Not sure if you use Photoshop Graham but if you do you could try applying a luminosity mask to a colour filter. I’m not home to try it but I think there is an answer using luminosity because the part you are asking about is the brightest and should be pretty easy to select. Will be interested to hear others suggestions.

Hmmmm… I happen to like the overexposed spot in the background. I think it helps the composition. It draws the eye in the direction that you want it to go.

Hi Kent (I feel I should say Mr. DuFault when addressing a Master),

I think I have received another valuable lesson in photography from you. I just assumed that over-exposure was a bad thing and showed a lack of ability in how to use a camera properly (which is actually the case in this instance). This was one of my earlier mobile shots where I just pointed and snapped so no forethought into the image design whatsoever. Even mobiles have some rudimentary adjustment controls.

You have made me rethink the ‘rules' of the game now. I guess its not so cut and clear, good or bad, but more like how to control the flaws to achieve what you want.

        Thanks for your comments.

    Thanks Rob,

I only have a rudimentary editor called Photopad by NCH. I don't have Photoshop but I have downloaded the new Lightroom CC trial version to see if I should get it. I believe Photoshop is a lot more complicated then Lightroom.

Must say, the basic editing tools are great but I can't seem to find any layering type tools. Maybe the trial version is limited? As a complete beginner, I'm thinking maybe I should get the once-only purchase of Lightroom 6 and hope it comes with a manual. This should suffice to get me into the world of Lightroom and begin my education.

      Hey Graham,

I just graduated to LR Classic after learning that my iPhoto, Aperture, and Google Nix applications have all been obsoleted.  I have learned while dealing with my LR Classic learning curve that there are many very good LR video tutorials.  Perhaps you could start there.  Good luck, Gray

    • #315983

      Dahlia Ambrose
      Keymaster

Hi Graham, if you wish to use the clone tool, there is one in lightroom in the adjustments panel on the right. You can also use the adjustment brush tool to brush certain areas and work on them. As far as I know, the trial version has no limitations in terms of tools available.

    • #315997

      Hi Graham.

LR does not have layers. Sorry I opened that can of worms.

The LR and PS combination is extremely powerful but the learning curve is long. The results you can achieve are worth the effort of learning in IMHO. As mentioned there are lots of Youtube videos on the subject. I would start with learning LR and progress to PS only when you can’t accomplish what you want with LR.

A big group thank you to all who passed on advice. I think you're right Rob, so it'll be baby steps for me beginning with LR. Thanks again everyone.
