By definition a silhouette is a view of an object or scene consisting of the outline and a featureless interior, with the silhouetted object usually being black. They are achieved by backlighting and exposing for the light behind the desired silhouetted subject. The silhouette can be the subject matter or used to showcase the rest of the image, either way it's a striking way to shoot.
