Light Stalking This Week: Dueling Elements, Optimal Exposure and Tractors!

Tersha's latest photog challenge, made me reckon what might be my most memorable encounter with the concept of “elements”. Surprisingly not, it was through television; more specifically, cartoons! The year was nineteen ninety-something, and cable TV was as popular as it is nowadays… Local transmissions were the thing for both visuals and radio and in those elementary school years, homework was to be done after watching some TV while grabbing a bite.

The show was “Captain Planet and the Planeteers“, and as if pulled from Tolkien‘s weirdest dreams, the story follows five magic rings given by Gaia herself to a diverse group of good-willing teenagers. Plot twist for the thrill, it didn't take place in mid-earth but in the late 20th century. Luckily for us, those rings of power were resourced to save the day and not to rule them all.

The idea behind the show was simple, representing the most notorious elements around us; being used in a noble way. Despite the racial stereotypes in the characters, the show might have been something since it was parodied not so long ago in a Rick and Morty episode.

To make things more interesting, we were commissioned to depict a battle of elements! Quickly, one understands that battle refers to contrast, drama and juxtapositions! And if you feel inspired to enlarge the current gallery, Tersha suggested exposure bracketing for achieving richer tones. In a nutshell, this technique is THE way to go for achieving optimal exposure across the whole area being framed.

Up next, a nice dose of visual delight!

Struggling also happens in a friendly manner, and liquids often struggle to get along with each other. Like a duel between cold and warm air streams, like a jar filled with distinct types of soil or even fire igniting different colors due to chemical compounds.

Any juxtaposition of same-state elements offers an encircled dialogue capable of triggering surprise, and that's exactly what this masterpiece of oil and water delivers to the eye.

After contemplating this gorgeous visual for a minute or two, I can't stop imagining a high-quality metal print of it hanging in a brightly illuminated living room!

Congrats Pat Garret for delighting us with your art!

The nearby town was evacuated after series of hard earthquakes last autumn – followed by four eruptions threatening to destroy it, as well as The Blue Lagoon and a big power plant nearby. Construction of protection walls have held the lava at bay so far. It is not over yet – we are expecting the next eruption in late August- September. No fun at all.
