It was supposed to be the future of everything.
And it still could be, but things need to take off from here for that to happen.
Sure, Apple doesn’t enter into any market lightly, and there’s little reason to believe the Vision Pro and eventual Vision family of products won’t eventually win the day, but money is also on Cupertino’s side. Meta? Instagram and Facebook print money, sure, but the competition is intense and side projects such as the company’s Vision Pro competitor don’t really make sense.
In particular, Apple is introducing a lower margin unit here soon and Meta was still languishing on its “high-end” model.
Meta CEO Andrew Bosworth wrote in a blog discussing the cancellation: “We have many prototypes in development at all time. But we don’t bring all of them into production. We move forward with some, we pass on others.”
As PetaPixel notes from The Verge, this doesn’t mean that Meta is entirely out of the game as their research and development completed thus far could be transferred to a new project. What that could be remains to be seen. Hypothetically, all of this is supposed to connect somehow with Meta’s ecosystem of product offerings and platforms. We don’t see how this can’t be done on an Apple platform and wonder how much of the calculus that factoid presented when canceling the project. Then again, being under Apple’s thumb might not be ideal for companies like Meta hence the desire to carve out their niche with a competing headset.
Any thoughts on the future of headsets such as the Vision Pro are welcome in the comments.
