TikTok Parent Intros AI Video Generator in China

The rise of AI content is seemingly inevitable as TikTok parent company ByteDance just launched a tool in China capable of creating videos and populating the company’s platforms with the resulting content.

If that seems to kill the purpose of social media, you’re not the only person thinking that. Even so, it looks like this kind of medium is coming whether we like it or not.

Reuters reports that Jimeng AI is now available to Apple users in China after being released earlier for Android devices. This apparently follows a slew of similar such tools to hit the Chinese market in the wake of OpenAI’s Sora.

It also isn’t free, interestingly enough. To use Jimeng AI, subscribers need to pay one of several prices depending on their level of commitment to the new tool: 69 yuan ($9.65) for a monthly plan, 79 yuan for one month, or 659 yuan for the annual plan, Reuters details.

In other markets, such as those were Meta is a major force, we are seeing much the same trends although they are occurring at the same time that users are supposedly putting a premium on “authenticity” in social media content with smaller platforms proliferating.

From Google Gemini to the aforementioned offerings from OpenAI, there isn’t a dearth of options but whether or not this kind of content is appropriate for platforms that are supposed to showcase reality remains a question for the future. Is the drive to put AI on everything part of what is driving this or is there some kind of future where social media decides to go all-in with AI and detach from reality? I guess we’ll just have to see where the money goes.

What do you think is the future of AI-generated content on social media? Let us know in the comments.
