The AI revolution is now on your Google Pixel 8 Pro.
We had some word a while back that this was coming but it is finally here and, while feelings on AI might be mixed, there’s little denial that this is a pretty big leap forward for smartphones.
In terms of capabilities, Gemini is on par with competitors and beats them in terms of performance, Google notes extensively.
“With the image benchmarks we tested, Gemini Ultra outperformed previous state-of-the-art models, without assistance from object character recognition (OCR) systems that extract text from images for further processing. These benchmarks highlight Gemini’s native multimodality and indicate early signs of Gemini's more complex reasoning abilities.”
One unique feature of Gemini is that it will be able to leverage Google’s various platforms when delivering text, images, mathematical, coding, or other types of analysis. That means the full power of search, YouTube, and others are at Gemini’s disposal which is no small universe of data to be sure.
“We trained Gemini 1.0 at scale on our AI-optimized infrastructure using Google’s in-house designed Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) v4 and v5e. And we designed it to be our most reliable and scalable model to train, and our most efficient to serve. On TPUs, Gemini runs significantly faster than earlier, smaller and less-capable models. What will be interesting to see is if any of this translates into a premium for the smartphone itself.
